More than Just the Basics

Revised Bio 08/09/04
Born and raised in Vancouver, BC, Carly Pope already had a number of film and television roles to her credit (Disturbing Behaviour, Nightman) when she burst onto the American scene playing the pivotal character Samantha on NBC’s high-school drama Popular. Since then she has portrayed a heroin addict in Purple Haze, played opposite Leelee Sobieski in The Glass House, appeared in Jeff Probst’s Finder’s Fee, and in Orange County

Carly’s passion for acting began during her high school years in Vancouver where she appeared in stage classics such as The Odd Couple, playing Mickey, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, playing Titania. Discovered while still in high school, she quickly made the jump to television and film roles working opposite actors such as Sally Field (A Cooler Climate) and Chevy Chase (Snow Day). The Globe and Mail stated, “she is part of a phenomenon that’s seen Hollywood agents looking more and more to Canada for fresh faces,” and listed her as one of Canada’s “Young Leaders.” Splitting her time between Los Angeles and Vancouver, Carly is currently attending university when her filming schedule allows. She speaks Italian, Spanish and French fluently and is seeking to expand her education in literature and languages.

Carly Pope found out the day after her high school graduation that she was going to Romania to shoot a feature film. "Acting was always an innate ambition," said Pope, who was born August 28 and raised in Vancouver, BC, the middle of three children. "It was where I belonged." Pope trained in dance until she entered Lord Byng Secondary School, when she began studying drama in an advanced program. An agent saw her in a school stage production, which led to Carly's screen debut in an independent children's film, "Cowboys and Aliens," on location in distant Eastern Europe.
She returned and enrolled at the University of BC in Vancouver for a semester, but demand for the gifted young actress was already heating up. Carly's fast-rising career took off when she won a starring role in the feature film, "A Cooler Climate," with Sally Field and Judy Davis directed by Susan Seidelman. She appeared in the Paramount release "Snow Day," a children's comedy with Pam Greer and Chevy Chase. Her television credits include leads in the ABC television movies "Our Guys" and "Trapped in a Purple Haze". Sam in the WB hit show "Popular" was her first role as a series regular. Pope compared her character, Sam, to "a builder, or a contractor. She has all the right tools, but doesn't know how to use them properly." Sam doesn't realize yet just how unique she already is. "She's trying too hard," continued Pope. "Her actions don't match up to her convictions, and that's what she still has to learn." Pope returns to Vancouver often to spend time with her family, with whom she is close. She enjoys long walks, writes poetry, and reads constantly. She plans to learn how to play the guitar. Pope makes her new home in Los Angeles.

Carly Pope continued to turn heads with her starring role as Sam McPherson in "Popular." During her recent hiatus, Pope took the time to act in two feature films -- "Finder's Fee," starring James Earl Jones and directed by "Survivor" host Jeff Probst, and "The Glass House," starring Leelee Sobieski. She has also appeared in a number of movies, including "Trapped in a Purple Haze," in which she starred as a teenage heroin addict opposite Jonathan Jackson. Pope loves to travel when time allows and enjoys studying languages (she speaks Italian, Spanish, and French). She hopes to continue her studies at a university in the future.

Did you know?

At Carly's graduation, she wore an outfit that didn't fit her physique well. She had on a tube top under a blazer, and as she was walking across the stage the tube slid down to her waist. She covered herself up,so nobody actually saw it fall, but when she got back to her seat, she had to maneuver the tube back up again, and her friends were all laughing at her.
Teen People Magazine

Brendan Fehr (Michael on Roswell) and Carly are good friends. They both came down to audition for Roswell and he lived with her the first month after he moved down when the show was picked up.

Quotes

Carly commented on Popular
"[Popular] has a wit that is biting, but it takes some effort to catch all the jokes. It makes you work harder."
--Pope in New York Daily News, September 22, 1999

Medusa Magazine:
"I kind of see myself as a cartoon that's on its way to becoming a real person that has to find that special amulet or mushroom to get to that next realm or level. I don't feel like anything is that tangible. It freaks me out, why I feel unhappy or conflicted and why that can change on a dime. I feel very manic right now, but I'm confident where I am."

"Good manners and respecting your elders, a sense of community, holding a conversation at a social event - that's how I grew up."
