Teen Movieline

Popular fans know her as funky alterna-chick Sam McPherson, future step-sister and former nemesis to ultrapopular Brooke McQueen. The WB.com presents, from the pages of Teen Movieline, an interview with Carly Pope who talks about life on and off camera as well as her relationship with Brendan Fehr. Having just completed filming for the thriller The Glass House opposite Leelee Sobieski, with whom she clicked so well, she was Leelee's first choice for an interview in this issue of Teen Movieline. That's how the two came to be chatting over cappuccinos recently at a cafe in L.A.

Leelee Sobieski: You originally went up for the role of Brooke, who's now played by Leslie Bibb, but they chose you for the role of Sam. How did that happen?
Carly: When I read for Brooke, I had bright pink hair with burgundy highlights. I do things like that. Well, Brooke is a very straight-laced girl, so I don't think the pink hair fit with the character. Plus, I wasn't very into playing Brooke. I didn't think I could play a cheerleader week after week. Then they said, "Can we throw you a curveball? Do you want to read for Sam?"

Leelee: How do you feel about dating actors, as opposed to real human beings?
Carly: I haven't really dated any actors. And my friends who are actors aren't just actors. They're other things, too, like writers or humanitarians.

Leelee: Are you dating anyone now?
Carly: No, I'm not. But I could be when this comes out, things can change so rapidly.

Leelee: What was your best date?
Carly: I don't date often. I meet people, and if it works, it works.

Leelee: Have you ever been in love?
Carly: Yes, I have. It's different for everyone, but for me, it was fantastic.

Leelee: What's your friendship with Brendan Fehr like?
Carly: Brendan and I have gone through a parallel experience - the exact same things at the same time. We almost worked together on Roswell. We both booked shows on the same network at the same time. When things were tough, we had each other to talk to.

Leelee: If you had to match your personality to a character in a film, who would that be?
Carly: I very much see myself as Natalie Wood's character in Rebel Without a Cause - she's really sassy and confident and kind of independent, but also loving.

Leelee: Name your favorite film.
Carly: Rebel Without a Cause and also Citizen Kane. You know what film I also adore, in a kind of childhood nostalgia way? Clash of the Titans. It's a film my brother and I used to watch all the time, and it's brilliant. I heard they're doing a remake of it, and I hope they don't. It's so classic.

Leelee: If you could travel anyplace in the world, where would it be?
Carly: I would love to go all over Africa. Hike Mount Kilimanjaro. Go to Mozambique.
